Tasmania

Tasmania remains one of my best bikepacking experiences, not only for the scenic landscape, but also for the context. I was returning from a 3 months field campaign in Antarctica and while this trip was memorable, the lack of freedom at the research station in Antarctica made me feel a bit trapped and I needed an adventure.

It was also my first bikepacking trip, in the sense that I was riding for the first time without panniers, but with a saddle and frame bag. I enjoyed how it allows you to just pack what you need and keeps that sporty feeling on the bike.

The route

I completed the loop below in a counterclockwise direction, starting with the eastern part of Tasmania and its rolling hills and ending with the more mountainous western part. The loop is about 1,000 km and 14,000 m of elevation gain, you can find the details on my komoot collection.
